Three reasons to work with GX Computers?

Firstly

I offer a repair and support service for both Apple and Windows computers/laptops that is reliable and cost effective.

If your computer or laptop is running slowly I can significantly speed them up. I can check for viruses and spyware, which if present, can have a performance impact on your machine.

Secondly

I can set up the technology in a way that is streamlined and logical so that working with computers, laptops and tablets becomes a pleasure rather than a pain.

Thirdly

I can make short instructional videos for you on a range of computers topics. These videos are geared personally to you and run from my website.

Unwanted Laptops

I understand that for some pupils, through lack of funds, accessing online tasks set by schools is a real challenge. I am aware, through my IT company GX Computers, that many people have old laptops that are not being used. These laptops might be too old to run the latest version of Windows but there are alternative options.

If a laptop could provide the following, then online lessons/homework could be carried out and completed.

Hardware

Ideally a laptop with a working battery (if the battery is in place but does not work, a replacement could be purchased, or the laptop could run on the mains lead).
Preferably a laptop with a charger (if the charger is missing a replacement can be purchased).
A wireless connection on the laptop (if this is missing a wireless access point can be added).
A webcam that also has a microphone (again if missing a cheap external one could be fitted).

Software

A reliable operating system. I would generally not install Windows but would use a free Open-Source operating system called Linux Mint. This operating system works well on older laptops.
Linux Mint is very much like Windows in the way that it works. The look and feel of the program is so much like a Windows installation.
An Internet browser, I will install Google Chrome.
The ability to read and write to Microsoft Office files, Mint comes with a free program called Libre Office that reads and writes to all Word, Powerpoint and Excel files.
The ability to meet online. I will install Zoom, which is free.
The ability to print - Mint will auto detect most modern printers.

How do I know that my data has been removed?

The disc drive will totally wiped so that no data can be recovered from it. The wiping process will be done with software that deletes to the DoD (US Department of Defence) standard of 5220-28-M 3 passes. After the drive has been wiped using these settings no data will be recoverable from the drive, even using specialist recovery software.
In addition, in nearly all laptops, the original old slow hard disc drive will be replaced with a new fast solid state hard drive.

I will provide you with a written receipt confirming that your data has been wiped.

I intend to provide this service for zero cost.

I will accept any donated laptops. If your laptop is too old to reuse, I will recycle it, retaining any usable parts for use in other machines. Whether it is usable or not, all data will be completely wiped from the hard disc drive.

What I will do when you contact me

I will arrange to come and see you to assess what it is that needs to be addressed. I will not charge for this visit.
I will provide you with a written explanation of what I believe needs to be done.
I will provide you with a written estimate, which will include costing and an estimate of how long the repair/update process is going to take.
If I need to take your equipment off-site I will offer you a loan laptop/computer whilst the work is being carried out.

Processing personal information on the website

No personally identifiable information is used on the website, cookies are not used. The website is organised in the following way.

There is no facility for a visitor to enter a user name and/or password on the website.
No personal details - name, address, phone number or email address are stored on the site.
No financial transactions take place on the site.
On the 'Contact' page there is no contact form for a visitor to fill in. Instead there is an email contact button which a visitor can click on to make contact with the company.

Visitor Information
Every computer connected to the internet is provided with a unique (domain) name and an IP (Internet Protocol) address. GX Computers does not host the website, this is done by a company called LCN. When a visitor comes to the website the LCN servers log the visit. Over a period of time it is possible for me to log into the LCN portal to see how many visitors have come to the site, how long they have stayed, which parts of the site they have visited and what part of the world they have come from. As no personal user information is used on the website it is very unlikely that any individual's personal details can be tracked after visiting the site. The information that is collected by the LCN servers stays within the company on their servers.
